IP&T 301 Modules 3&5

I think Carol Gilligan's criticism of Kohlberg's theory in module 5 is interesting. I do not think there could be alot of research on the differences that women and men are different when it comes to theri moral compassess. I do somewhat see however how Carol Gilligan can argue that point. It is interesting to me, because i never thought about it. But in my life i know that when it comes to morality, i do think more about others and my relationship with others instead of the rights of individuals.

Internet Safety Reflection

I completed sections 1-3 of the PLE

1.Article:
http://www.kidsmart.org.uk/teachers/ (Kids Smart Web Site)

 2. The videos i watched were about trying on new identities. Students try on all these identities through Myspace and Facebook. The videos showed how kids these days are beginning to become less and less concerned with privacy and discretion. The videos showed us how student addiction to the internet can take over a persons life. The students become less social around their families and more confined to their rooms, where they spent most of their time on their computers.

3. Take-Away: I love reading talks that the apostles give. They always have revelation about the things that are important to us. I feel like internet safety is so important in our homes. In Elder. Bednar's talk he spoke to the youth about knowing what the real things are. I feel like this is so important in these days where there are so many people who are creating identities that are other than their own online. I also think that all the guidelines in the Provident Living guidelines for Internet Safety are guidelines that i am going to use as a mother to implement in my home to protect my children against the dangers of online predators.

4. i. The person that i interviewed knew some of the internet safety rules for hr home and what she would do to be aware of her children s activity on the internet.

ii. The person was completely shocked when i told them about the website that people could go onto and have a completely different life. She was also horrified at the story that i told her about  the girl that met a guy online and in the end he killed her.

iii. I was surprised because i guess i assumed that everyone knew these things about the internet and about steps to take to prevent these things from happening in your home.

iv.I hope that the person will go home and enforce some of the rules that i have shared with her.

Week 12 Technology in my classroom

During the practicum I was in the Salt Lake City District, at Newman Elementary school. I was in third grade and loved it. One of the third grade classes had a computer at each student’s desk. The students got to work on the computers pretty much all the time. In the classroom I was in there was only two computers. In the morning we would use the computers to record the students reading minutes. The students were also able to use the computers during literacy centers as part of a center for literacy or math. Other than the computer, we had limited use and availability of any technology. We did have a Elmo, but even that was not very useful as it was not the newest Elm and therefore gave us a lot of problems. I think if my teacher had more access to technology, she would have used it more, I know that she was a fan of technology. In lessons where the Elmo could have been used, it was. In some of the lessons, I think power points could have been useful, to make things more visual for the students. In all I think that we definitely could have used more technology if it was more available to us.

IP&T 301 Motivation

1. I think the students in my classroom in the cohort were more extrinsically motivated more than intrinsically motivated. Most of the time the students would perform an activity or follow a rule for the reward that follwed e.g. table points to get a trinket or free time.

2. Informal raise can enhance intrinsic motivation, while controlled praise can undermine it. When it is unexpected praise students feel good about what they have done, instead of telling students "they should keep up the good work" Rewards can enhance extrinsic motivation as students who are extrinsically motivated are motivated by rewards and tangible things.

3. Expectancies are students expectations of succeeding. When students have a high competency belief, students are instrinsically motivated to complete a task, to have a feeling of completion or completing a challenging task. Values has an influence on extrinsic motivation, because students have a reason to complete a task. When students know that they are going to be rewarded.

4.  Student -level Techniques in the classroom happened often: I saw that our mentor teacher would always give students praise for effort, letting students know that they were trying hard and that their hard work was worth rewarding. When students were off task the teacher would positively reinforce them and let them know that the choices they are making is goin to affect thier work. When students did not complete their homework, she would let them know, it was not because they did not understand but because they made the decision not to put any effort into it.
Classroom-Level Technique: Every Monday morning the students would complete what they called a ATB, they would write their goals for the week. What they wanted to accomplish, what they wanted to get on theri math test, and some of the things they wanted to learn. This way the teacher taught the students to make short term goals that they could acheive becuase they set them.

5. I think i most agree with the self-worth theory. I think alot of students do things because they do not want to seem like they are less important or less smart then thier peers. I also think that trying to increase students self-worth can help them realize their abilities, and try harder and i think it allows students to become more intrinsically motivated. The students become motivated by the activity itself.

videos

Inside Kapunahala: http://etec.hawaii.edu/etecvideos/videos/kap/?page=ft_auto
Bookends of war: http://etec.hawaii.edu/etecvideos/videos/bow/?page=ov_auto

In the videos: Inside Kapunahala and Bookends of War, I noticed that the students were excited about using technology. In inside Kapunahala, the students had their responsibilities in the crew for creating this station and using technology to record the information they had. One of the students said they she is now a better speaker and can speak her mind because of the opportunities she has had to be par to creating the TV station. I think this type of technology is very advantageous for students. In Bookends of War the students were excited to be recording their information and working on the computers. In all I think students enjoy technology and creating their own websites. I thought it was a great idea to display students work on their own class website. Publishing the work online I think gives the students a sense of accomplishment and also feel important to know that their work is online where everyone can see.

Lesson planning and video response

Language Arts:http://docs.google.com/View?id=dddd8bx7_10ggt9whhf
Science: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dddd8bx7_11f5mnjxdk
math: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dddd8bx7_12ct2t3knm

While watching the videos I learned the importance of integrating technology with your studnets in your lesson plans. There are so many things that students can learn to use. I feel like technology, if it is available can enrich a lesson tremendously. In the I like spiders vidoes, students learned how to use cameras and take pictures and how to send those pictures to Missouri. While studnets are learning about spiders they are learning about Missouri at the same time. Technology can also allow you to integrate more than just one subject into 1 lesson. In the lesson students also learned how to make slide shows. I think for students, especially the younger grades, this could be so exiciting. I also think that when students have direct connection to the technology being used, they learn alot more and they get more excited because they get to be like the teacher.

Technology Inventory.

I am in a third grade class. My initial observation, was that there is only two computers in class. I think that they need to have more than just two computers for the teachers to implement more technology in her lessons. However once a week, the students leave their regular classrooms and go to the computer lab for an hour a week to learn about technology. They do fun activities on the computers, while learning typing skills. I think technology is a useful tool, but i don't think you need it in every lesson. I have completed sections 1 & 2 of the PlE for this week. The informed consent and midcourse evaluation.

Week 8 cognitive development and language

1. I see how disequilibrium is not necessarily a good thing but it does motivate students, and i see how assimilation and accomodation play a role in it. I know from experience, that when i do not know how to do something that is not familiar to me, because i have no background knowledge of it, it takes me a while to figure it out, but i am determined to get it, so i i accomodate for that knowledge.

2. I see how the Zone of Proximal development applies in instruction. It is important that we know the level that students are in independantly, but it is important to know how much we can challenge them without confusing or frustrating them. It is important that with teacher, or peer help they can accomplish more.

3. I agree with Vygotsky on the role of language in logical thinking. I disagree with Piaget who says thinking comes before language. I agree that they are intertwined. I think that we naturally think, but in order to make sense of our thinking we need to have language to attach to our thinking. I can't say i'm thinking about a tree, if i did not have the langauge to know that a tree is called a tree.

4. I think that encouraging studnents to be active learners is an important instructional principle. I do think there are other ways they learn, but actively learning i think helps students remember more to store in thier long term memories. I know from experience that when i am learning to make a new food dish,i have to not just read the recipe, but practice it. I use the background knowledge that i have from cooking and link that to the new recipe. The next time i cook that meal, i know how to cook it, and if it wasnt good the first time i made it, i can tweak it.

I think an upside to implementing this science tour, is children get a chance for hands on experience using kidspiration. Students can manipulate the animals and learn by doing. The downside to this, is that not all students have access to a computer and so it would not be able to be given as homework. There might also not be enough computers in the school for all the students in the class to use and so it would be more time consuming to implement a lesson using this.
I also commented on sand, kellean and marias voicethread.

week 7 Social Constructivism

1. In elementary school i remember a cooperative learning activity we had, when we had to build a volcano in groups, ans then present it with information about the volcano to the class. We all had a specific idea that we were in charge of. It was important that we trusted each other in our group to get the work done and it was alos important that we did out part as we were graded as a group. In college, this semester, in our management class we were to read a book as a group and were assigned specific sections of the book to create a presentation for the class. We are presenting next week, but are all resposible for our part to contribute to the group.

2.I do think cooperative learning promotes learning to a degree. Sometimes when put into groups we only learn the items that we are in charge of presenting or whatever it is that we have to do with the information. but, on the other hand we have group members to lean on if we do not understand a concept. I think cooperative learning in the earlier grades helps alot, in the higher grades and college, i think it helps as far as getting more done in a small time and lightening the work load on an individual, but i do not think it helps learn the concepts more in the higher grades.

3.Instructional conversations: Assumes that teaching involves conversation- that students have something to say and that is invalid.
Reciprocal questioning: a method of reinforcing new concepts, information, or procedures that students have learned in class.
The differences are that instructional conversations have students converse about the text instead of questions and reciprocal questioning is using how and why questions. Both have the same goal in mind is to understand the material, one has conversation and the other questions.

4. Ability-grouping is best in reading groups, where students have the same ability and capabilities. Mixed-groups would be beneficial in group projects. Students with different abilities can all contribute in this setting. Not all the students have to be good at reading or math.

science challenge Activity idea

1. Create a power point with four habitats and the characteristics of each habitat. After the teacher explains the characteristics of each habitat, she will then provide visual images of the animals that live in each of those habitats and why, and also the characteristics of the animals that helps them survive in a specific habitat. The four habitats to be discussed are: wetlands, fores, rain forest, and dessert. While the power point is being explained by the teacher, the students will be providing feedback about what they know about the habitats and animals at hand and using prior knowledge to associate the new knowledge with previous knowledge. Once the students understand the different habitats , the teacher will introduce kidspiration, The students will place at least four animals in each habitat. Once the students have completed the activity, they are going to share with a partner the animals that they put in each habitat and why they did.

2. i)Content:Standard 3
Students will develop an understanding of their environment. Objective 1
Investigate relationships between plants and animals and how living things change during their lives.
ii) Pedagogy: Classifying, inferring, predicting, measuring and acquiring and processing data (constructing table of data, constructing graphs, describing relationships). I feel like this is a good pedagogy for the content because we are going to determine which animals belong in a certain environment. By doing so we are classifying the relationships between animals and their environments(plants).
iii)Technology:We will be using power point and kidspiration to determine the characteristics of animals and their environments through a power point and then using kidspiration to visually see the content and it will provide them practice with the tool.
iv) Representation: i think the representation we will use, gives us a chance to assess the content we are trying to teach. It will help us understand the knowledge that the student has. I think the assessment will also give the students a visual representation to understand the content more.

virtual tour

I watched Marias, Alexandras and Gillians. I think virtual tours are an interesting technology to use in the classroom. I think the upside of virtual tours would be the interesting part ehy bring to a lesson or assignment. I think students can learn so much through a virtual tour and it gives them an opportunity to navigate their way through the tour. The downside to using a google earth tour would be the difficulty level. I think in the younger grades it might be hard for students to understand exactly what to do or where to go. Also this kind of activity would have to be a school assignment as not all students have access to technology.

IPT 301 Week 6 Behaviorism

1. An example of contiguity learning in school. When i study for a test, after i get a good grade on a test and after i have tried so many different study techniques. When i get a good grade i associate it with the study techinique that i used.
2. After reading the book five love languages, i realized that one of my love languages is words of affirmation and it helped me think about the question: what reinforcement i thought what effective in elementary school. I think when my teacher would praise me for the good work i had done, i felt good and tended to work harder and because my teacher would tell me i was always doing good work, i thought i was a good student and throughout school i did my schoolwork, and in those times when i was in elementary school candy was still allowed and so that always helped to. and i loved stickers.
3. I think reinforcement schedules could promote good work to. I would use a schedule maybe to say after 15 check marks for good behavior on the board i would have a class wide reward or maybe if a student handed in thier homework assignments, after every third homework assignment completed the students would get free time, or reading time.
4. Behaviorism suggests that after we do something that is wanted of us, we recieve a reward and that is what motivates us to continuosly do that something. In the gospel we are given the choice to chose between right and wrong and the reward that we get from it, is the promise that we get from chosing the right is not something tangible, but something we belive in.

IPT 301 WEEK 5 COGNITION

1.Helping students pay attention and helping students store and retrieve information effectively are the two most useful intructional strategies. There are various strategies under each strategy to help the students with these functions. I think it is important to help students with these strategies so that they remember the work that is being taught so that they can be assessed according to what they know. If we can help students remember and help them retrievei information it will make our jobs easier for one, but it will also help them draw connections with previous and current work.

2. Low-road transfer: involves the spontaneous , automatic transfer of highly practical skills, with little need for reflective thinking. Automaticity occurs when a person performs a task very fast. E.g.1. A soccor player knows that when the ball is coing towards him he has to kick it. He has learned this skill and now it is something that he/she does automatically. E.g.2. When we read, we read from left to right, it is something that we have become proficient in and thats how we have been taught, so without thinking about it when we pickup a book, we automatically read from left to right.

High-road transfer: a strategy where an individual purposefully and consciously applies general knowledge.e.g. 1 In a math problem to multiply fraction, i might try to remeber how i would use that multiplication strategy to solve another multiplication strategy that i previously have. E.g. 2 When i cook a specific dish i might try an remember the strategies i used when i cooked it before, so that i might make is as good as it was last time.

3. I think problem-solving transfer and analogical transfer i have seen used the most in a classroom of public education. Students in subjects may need to recall analgies to help with new ones and also in math students use problem solving strategies used before to solve new problems.

4. I use algorithms in math class all the time. A prescribed sequence of steps to achieve a goal.
I have use heuristics when i sew, i estimate how much material i will need when i look at a specific person to figure out how much material will be needed to make a shirt for that person, by looking at their figure, weight and height. I do not take the formal steps in taking the exact measurements, but i make an educated guess about how much material i will need.

Virtual Tour Planner

Grade 3
Standard 2, Objective 1 a

Identify the elements of culture (e.g. language, religion, customs, artistic expression, systems of exchange).

I chose this content as i thought it would be interesting to use google earth to give the students the opportunity to explore the different cultures in various ways other then just seeing a picture.
I also chose this content because i like learning new things about different cultures and i feel like every time i create a lesson plan or something about cultures i learn something new. The representation of the subject in Google earth i think can be very useful to students. It helps students visualize the content more and that way it means more to the students and they remember more.

Location Activity DescriptionGoogle Earth Content
1. Colosseum.Rome, Italy.
Make sure that you have the 360 icon checked in the layers column and take a 360 tour of the inside of the Colosseum. Write a journal of what you think it might have felt to be in the middle of the Colosseum and tell me what you hear and feel if the entire building was full of people cheering for you.

2. South Africa
Make sure the national geographic box is checked and the Africa megaflyover, and look at the sheep picture. The tribes lived in sparse spaces of land and survived on the land. Their dances from the you tube video is how they praised and gave thanks for the things that they had and also to prepare themselves for war. After watching the you tube video and investigating the land that they lived on, write down a few things you think you would need to live on scarce land like this. When your writing your ideas, view it as things you would need if you were the africans back then.

3. Birla- Mandir, New deli in India.
Look at the panaramio view of the temple and tell me how the arcitecture of the colosseum differs to that of the temple and what you think each type of building tell you about the roman culture and the indian culture.

Map of India

4. singapore, chine
Make sure that the 360 icon is checked and do a tour of the sculptures. There are four sculptures that are there, expalin what each sculpture looks like and if you think it is an expresssion od chinese culture.

Week 4 Intelligence

1. i would make sure students knew how to identify and understand their own emotions first, by role playing and storytelling where students express their emotions a positive way. I would then make sure that students knew how to identify other students emotions: again i would have skits or have the children role play. I would also model communication skills. After the students recognise thier own and their peers emotions, i would have activities to regulate emotion. I would have a mini lesson maybe in the first week of the school year to model activities that would help students use their emotions as a learning experience and how to turn their negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Lastly i would promote self-motivation, by modeling a class encourages making mistakes and correcting them and making sure students feel like no mistake is a mistake that cant get corrected.

2.I think Gardner's Multiple Intelligences would be more useful to me as a teacher. I think all students learn in different ways and if we as teachers can use these multiple Intelligences to help identify the different ways students learn, we can create lesson plans around the ways that students learn best.

3.I don't know if i am all for IQ tests, but as i was reading, i think there are so many factors that can influence how a student performs on any given test at any given time, but i do think that there may be a use in the individually administered IQ tests. It determines what is needed for an individual student, for placement or curriculum changes needed for that student.

digital story

I had fun making this digital story, i think it will be a great tool in creating interesting lessons and getting students engaged in the lesson. I think a major challenge in using a digital story in an elementary school classroom, would be the copy right issues. It is so easy to get access to so many free resources on the web, that we often times just copy and paste and don't realize that we are taking some one else's work. And we also need to find digital stories or create digital stories that cover elementary curriculum.

week 3 PLE....TPAK and storyboard

1. I understand TPACK to be the combination of pedegogical, content and technology knowledge. I think it is important for a teacher to understand this concept as it is important to know the right learning tool to use to teach the correct content and teaching that content through various types of technology. I think it helps teachers relate more to student what is being taught and it helps students relate more to their work, if the right learning environment is created through using technology in creative ways.

2.For our digital story project, the standards we have chosen are: Standard 1 ,Objective 2 develop language through viewing media and presenting and Standard 4, Objective 1 demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds. Both standards are for Kindergarten. Our digital story will help teach this content because it will go through all the letters of the alphabet and teach students what they sound like through oral language. The story will be drawn pictures of the alphabet letters and animals that start with that letter. The pictures will also help students develop and association with letters and animals.

week 3 questions from IP&T 301

1. Examples of summative assessment: tests, quizzes, paper and student portfolios. Formative assessment: self-assessments, peer assessments, learning logs and reflective journal. A formative can be used as a summative assessment later. formative and summative assessment work in concert to track progress in important learning.

2. A standardized achievemnet test is a test that measures current knowledge, what a student knows at a specific time. A standardized aptitude test is to test what a student may potemtially know int the future. An achievement test is a criterion- referenced and an aptitude test is a norm- refernced test.

3. I think any principle should be concerned about fallen test scores. Some of the factors that some of the teachers mentioned may have caused some difficulty for students to take the tests, but i general if scores have lowered to years in a row, then i, as i apriciple would be concerned about the the curriculum and the instruction.

4. As a teacher the modules can help me determine the best way to assess students and what assessments would work best for different learning outcomes. As a parent i would now understand how to evaluate how the tests are scored and how i would be able to track my childs achieevement and what he/she needs to work on.

Week two, what i thought was most useful and why?

I thought it was very useful to be able to create a website. Although i was a little frustrated at doing the assignment, because i hadn't done anything like this before, so it took a long time. It is now useful to know how to create a website for my students one day , when i am teaching/ I think a website it helpful as it can help parents stay in touch with what their students are doing in class and keep up to date with the content that is being taught. I think you can be so creative with a website and creating one.

technology background

I Love the internet and the availability of information that we have access to. I do however have no technology background except for facebook and email and surfing the web, so i am no very good at all in the technology area.
I have taken computer courses on powerpoint and microsoft and thins like that, so i know the basics.......
not very much
